Bhubaneswar: In a tragic development for the world of art and music, renowned music director Abhijit Majumdar has passed away while undergoing treatment. He was suffering from a liver-related illness and was receiving treatment at AIIMS. He was 54 years old at the time of his death.
Although his health condition had shown signs of improvement recently, he passed away this morning. His demise has created a huge void in the Odia music industry.
Abhijit Majumdar was one of the most popular and respected music directors of Ollywood. He had been suffering from a serious ailment, liver cirrhosis, for a long time. Initially, he was admitted to a private hospital in Cuttack. As his condition worsened, he was later shifted to AIIMS for advanced treatment. On September 4 last year, he was admitted to the ICU in critical condition. He was moved out of the ICU on October 23 and continued treatment in the General Medicine ward.
He remained under treatment in a coma-like condition for some time but gradually showed improvement. After recovering, he returned home a few days ago. However, as his health deteriorated again yesterday, he was re-admitted to the hospital. Sadly, he breathed his last this morning.
Abhijit Majumdar began his career with Sambalpuri songs and went on to create a strong presence in Odia and Sambalpuri films and albums, delivering numerous hit songs. Apart from composing music, he also lent his voice to several songs, many of which became superhits.
He made his entry into the film industry in the year 2000 with the movie Kashia Kapila. Since then, he composed music for more than 60 films and provided music direction for over 100 albums. Some of his evergreen hit songs include “Madhaba He Madhaba,” “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” “Nachiba Gabara Singh,” “Balunga Toka,” “Sajani Sajani,” and “Aame Ta Toka Sand Marka.”
Among popular item numbers, he himself sang “Tor Kancha Haladi Dehata Gori Lo.” His song “Rati Sara Bar Light Duku Duku” earned immense popularity. He was honored with the State Film Award in 2010 for the film “Tu Tha Mun Jauchhi Rushi” and again in 2022 for “Trishna.”
Though Abhijit Majumdar is no longer with us, his voice and the music he gifted to the audience will continue to live on in their hearts.
It may be noted that Abhijit Majumdar was born on September 11, 1971. He was initially a lecturer, but in 1996, he resigned from his job to pursue a full-time career in music and moved to Cuttack.
